Adenomyosis and Pregnancy

Adenomyosis, (including adenomyoma), is a disorder of endometrium, in which the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) breaks through the muscle wall of the uterus (the myometrium). It can be verified into diffuse adenomyosis and focal adenomyosis. Adenomyosis symptoms including pain during menses, pain with sex, heavy menstrula flow and so on. 

Adenomyosis often occurs on women between 40 and 50 years old, especially who's close to their menopause. Lots of adenomyosis cases are diagnosed in regular gynecological exam because of irregular menses or bleeding. The cause of adenomyosis remains unknown but some report shows that caesarean and curettage may trigger this problem. In about 30% to 50% adenomyosis cases are accompanying with endometriosis or fibroids.

Can women get pregnant with adenomyosis?
Even adenomysis mostly occur on women who's over their child-bearing ages, some young women may acquire this disease as well. The fertility problem is mostly concerned for those young patients. Generally, women who have severe adenomyosis and endometriois have very little chance to get pregnant. Luckily, such cases are rare. They do have a chance to conceive if adenomyosis is not severe. It is totally possible to get pregnant with adenomyosis even the chance is much lower than other women. Also if the cyst of adenomyois is removable, it's also a choice to conceive after the cyst is removed.

Is it more possible to have miscarriage if getting pregnant with adenomyosis?
Miscarriages may occur on every pregnant women. And there's no proof that focal adenomyosis patients are at a higher risk of miscarriage. But it is believed that diffuse adenomyosis may contribute to infertility and miscarriage.

What if I get pregnant with adenomyosis?
As there's no exact report shows adenomyosis may cause miscarriage, it is not suggested to have artificial abortion if it is the miscarriage that the mother worries about . If you want to have this baby, just carry it. Even, unfortunately, there's no specific management we can take to prevent miscarriage from occurring on pregnant women with adenomyosis, there're some women who deliver healthy babies even living with adenomyosis.
