Can Miscarriage Cause Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is one of the most common conditions of the female reproductive system and its incidence is increasing year by year. The condition not only brings physical pain to women but may also affect fertility and even lead to infertility. Therefore, women should have a full understanding of this disease.

Taking timely physical examinations and ensuring early detection and treatment is recommended. Besides, we need to pay attention to daily body care, maintain good living habits, and avoid some risk factors that may lead to endometriosis. So, can miscarriage cause endometriosis?

The relationship between miscarriage and endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which the endometrial tissue should normally grow in the uterine cavity and, in abnormal cases, appear in other areas, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvis. This ectopic endometrial tissue can change with the menstrual cycle, triggering pain and discomfort and sometimes affecting reproductive function. The effects of miscarriage, especially abortion, on a woman's health cannot be ignored. Studies have shown that abortion may increase a woman's risk of developing endometriosis.

During an abortion, the lining of the uterus is irritated by the scraping procedure, which not only expels the pregnancy from the body but may also result in fragments of the lining of the uterus and blood entering the pelvis. And some of the endometrial debris or blood will enter the pelvis through the fallopian tubes. With irregular surgical operation, or poor postoperative recovery, inflammatory bacteria and viruses may then spread and breed infections. Long-term inflammatory reactions may also lead to the development of endometriosis.

Specifically, abortion may induce endometriosis in the following ways:

1. Endometrial debris enters the pelvis: During an abortion, due to improper surgical operation or incomplete cleaning of the uterine cavity, cells and debris of the endometrium may enter the pelvis through the fallopian tubes and then grow ectopically in the pelvis. These ectopic endometrial tissues will still proliferate and shed like normal endometrium during the menstrual cycle, thus triggering an inflammatory reaction, and long-term stimulation may lead to endometriosis.

2. Postoperative infection and inflammatory reaction: After abortion, if women do not have effective postoperative care, uterine infection may occur. The bacteria will enter the pelvis through the cervix and even spread to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other body parts through the fallopian tubes, triggering pelvic inflammatory disease. Long-term pelvic inflammation not only affects women's reproductive health but may also provide conditions for the occurrence of endometriosis.

3. Changes in pressure in the uterine cavity: Abortion surgery may lead to changes in the pressure in the uterine cavity. If the surgery is not performed properly, it may cause damage to the uterine cavity or structural abnormalities of the uterus, which may, in turn, affect the flow of menstruation and induce retrograde menstrual blood flow. Reversed menstrual blood may enter the pelvis through the fallopian tubes, leading to the development of endometriosis.

Long-term effects of miscarriage on uterine health

In addition to the direct risk of endometriosis, frequent miscarriages can have long-term effects on a woman's uterine health. For miscarriage, especially abortion, while we can surgically terminate the pregnancy, the damage to the uterus caused by the procedure should not be underestimated. Without proper postoperative recovery, the normal repair and recovery of the uterine lining may be compromised, and repeated abortions over a long period of time may lead to a decline in uterine function.

1. Damage to the lining of the uterus: Repeated abortions may lead to varying degrees of damage to the lining of the uterus, resulting in endometrial hyperplasia, atrophy or other lesions. And these lesions will affect the menstrual cycle and even affect a woman's fertility. Especially when the endometrial damage is too severe, it may affect the implantation of the embryo, thus leading to infertility.

2. Uterine adhesions: After abortion, if adhesions occur during the healing process of the endometrium, intrauterine adhesions will be formed. And intrauterine adhesions will lead to distortion of the uterine cavity, and in severe cases, they will also prevent the ovum from being fertilized and developing, thus affecting the success rate of pregnancy. Multiple abortions and surgeries may increase the risk of intrauterine adhesions.

3. Uterine infection: After abortion, due to incomplete cleaning during the operation or improper postoperative care, bacteria can easily enter the uterine cavity through the cervix, leading to uterine infection. Prolonged infection may trigger uterine inflammation or even the formation of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, all of which may increase the risk of endometriosis.

When checking for endometriosis, patients need prompt treatment. Through its action of clearing heat and removing toxins, activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis, the traditional Chinese medicine Fuyan Pill can effectively relieve pelvic inflammation and pain caused by endometriosis, help regulate the hormone level in the body and improve the symptoms.

How to prevent endometriosis

1. Reduce the incidence of miscarriage: Miscarriage has a great impact on health, especially frequent abortions. Therefore, women should take effective contraceptive measures when planning pregnancy to avoid unnecessary abortions.

2. Regular checkups: Women should have regular gynecological checkups, especially those with a history of abortion or other gynecological diseases, and should pay more attention to the health of the uterus so that problems can be detected at an early stage and treated in a timely manner.

3. Maintain healthy living habits: Reasonable diet, moderate exercise, good work and rest and mental health are all important factors in maintaining the health of the female reproductive system.

4. Avoid unnecessary surgeries: Non-essential uterine surgeries should be avoided as much as possible, especially repeated abortions and caesarean sections, and the damage to the uterus should be minimized.
