Adenomyosis Signs, Symptoms, and Complications

Adenomyosis is a medical condition of the uterus that is also called internal endometriosis. This condition results from the lining cells of the uterus growing directly into the muscle wall of the uterus. When the lining cells of the uterus bleed at the time of the menstrual period, these misplaced cells in the muscle bleed as well.

Signs of adenomyosis

Pain with menses: Dysmenorrhea is a primary symptom of adenomyosis, pain with sex is another common sign as well. With the development of this disease, lower abdominal pain may begin one week before the period and last for another one or two weeks after the period.

Heavy menstrual flow: Menorrhagia is another cardinal symptom, which can easily cause anemia. In some cases, this condition can be misdiagnosed with metropathia hemorrhagica.

Infertility: It is a fact that some women with adenomyosis can get pregnant, but there still are many patients have this trouble.

Symptoms of adenomyosis

Common symptoms of adenomyosis are usually lower abdominal pain and heavy, prolonged menstrual bleeding. Cramps during menses can be quite unbearable. Abdominal pressure and bloating before menstrual periods commonly occurs as well.

Complications of adenomyosis

Even many woman who have adenomyosis also have endometriosis, but it's not for sure that adenomyosis can cause endometriosis. However, some studies have shown that adenomyosis may contribute to infertility.
