Why Does Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Cause Fatigue? Don't Ignore These 5 Symptoms!

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a common gynecological condition that brings significant distress to many women. Take Emily, a young professional, for example. After being diagnosed with PID, she not only endures lower abdominal pain and abnormal vaginal discharge but also frequently feels tired and weak. This severely impacts her work efficiency and quality of life. So, why does PID lead to fatigue?

The reasons for fatigue and weakness due to PID are multifaceted:

Firstly, when inflammation occurs in the pelvic region, the body's immune system kicks into high gear, mobilizing many immune cells to fight pathogens. This immune response process consumes substantial energy and nutrients, including proteins, sugars, and vitamins. Prolonged consumption of these resources depletes the body's energy reserves, leading to feelings of fatigue.

Secondly, inflammation triggers the release of various inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines and prostaglandins. These substances cause pain and affect the nervous system's function, leading to abnormalities in nerve transmission and metabolic regulation. The nervous system disruption further exacerbates fatigue, making one feel lethargic and weak.

Additionally, the pain and discomfort caused by PID can severely impact the patient's sleep quality. Insufficient or disrupted sleep prevents the body from getting adequate rest and recovery, leading to accumulated fatigue. Long-term sleep issues can also result in anxiety and depression, further worsening the symptoms of fatigue and weakness.

In addition to fatigue and weakness, PID has five significant symptoms that should not be ignored:

1. Lower Abdominal Pain

This pain can be a constant dull ache or intermittent sharp pain, with its intensity and nature varying based on individual differences and the severity of the condition. The pain often intensifies during activities, intercourse, bowel movements, or menstruation due to pelvic congestion and muscle contractions. Some patients may even avoid normal daily activities due to the pain.

2. Menstrual Irregularities

PID can affect a woman's menstrual cycle and flow. The inflammation may spread to the endometrium and ovaries, disrupting hormone secretion and regulation, resulting in irregular periods. Manifestations include increased menstrual flow, prolonged periods, or shortened menstrual cycles. Long-term menstrual irregularities can affect a woman's quality of life and may indicate a worsening of the condition or the presence of other complications.

3. Abnormal Vaginal Discharge

Typically, vaginal discharge is minimal, colorless, and odorless. However, PID can cause an increase in discharge, which becomes thick, yellow, green, or grayish-white, often accompanied by a foul odor.

4. Fever

In more severe cases of PID, the body may develop a fever as a response to infection. Patients may experience low-grade fever (37.5℃ to 38℃) or high fever (above 38.5℃), chills, and general symptoms such as coldness.

5. Infertility

If PID is not treated promptly and effectively, the inflammation may spread to the fallopian tubes and ovaries, leading to tubal adhesions, blockages, hydrosalpinx, and impaired ovarian function. The fallopian tubes are crucial for the meeting of sperm and egg and the transport of the fertilized egg. Any issues here can significantly reduce the chances of conception.

Additionally, ovarian dysfunction can lead to irregular ovulation or anovulation, further increasing the risk of infertility.

Upon experiencing any of these symptoms, women should not take them lightly and should promptly visit a hospital for a comprehensive examination and diagnosis. Early detection and treatment are crucial for controlling the condition of PID and preventing complications.

Women suffering from chronic PID can consider the herbal medicine Fuyan Pill, which clears heat and detoxifies, promotes blood circulation, removes blood stasis, strengthens the spleen, and removes dampness.

The pill can thoroughly eliminate the primary lesion and effectively inhibit the reproduction and growth of pathogens, thereby preventing the recurrence of the disease. However, it should be avoided during menstruation and pregnancy.
