Endometrial hyperplasia is a thickening of the inner lining of the womb. This condition most often affects young women who just begin to menstruate and older women who approach menopause or are post-menopausal. According to World Health Organization system, endometrial hyperplasia has four categories: simple, complex, simple with atypia, and complex with atypia. The main consideration for this classification is the risk of each hyperplasia develops to endometrial cancer (the risks is 1%, 5%, 10%, and 25% respectively).

 

The underlying cause of endometrial hyperplasia is your body is exposed to too much estrogen combined with insufficient progesterone levels. Why there is relative predominance of estrogen in your body?  Young women who begin to menstruate and women who have irregular periods are more likely to have relatively high estrogen level. Post-menopausal women who take estrogen without progesterone also lead to the imbalance of estrogen and progesterone.

 

 

 

 

A biopsy of endometrial tissue is performed to diagnose hyperplasia (a small sample is scraped from the endometrium and studied under the microscope).

Ultrasound can be done to assess the thickness of the endometrium.

Treatment of endometrial hyperplasia is individualized and this article doesn’t recommend specific treatment.

1. The most common treatment for endometrial hyperplasia is progestin, but progestin drug may cause headache, nausea, dizziness.

2. Hysterectomy also can treat endometrial hyperplasia and it is performed to remove endometrial hyperplasia, which means you can’t get pregnant any longer. If you want to be able to conceive, hysterectomy is not the best choice and you can consult with your doctor and choose alternative option.

3. Endometriosis tcm has advantages to treat endometrial hyperplasia. Traditional Chinese medicine considers thickening of the inner lining as the results of stagnation of Qi and blood. The herbs pangolin, peach kernel, safflower in fuyan pill can promote blood circulation by removing blood stasis.
