What is the treatment for thickened endometrium?

There are many causes of abnormal uterine bleeding. If you experience abnormal bleeding and the abnormal bleeding has not been helped or controlled by medication, your doctor may perform diagnostic tests for thickened endometrium.

How is thickened endometrium diagnosed?

1. During a pelvic examination, a biopsy of endometrial tissue may be taken. A biopsy is a sample of tissue is taken to be analyzed under the microscope. And usually a biopsy is performed as an outpatient and anesthetic is not needed. A small tube is passed into the womb through the vagina and then a sample of the endometrial tissue is sucked out and sent to the laboratory.

2. A dilatation and curettage (D&C) may be performed, during this procedure the cervix is widened and tissue samples are obtained from the lining of the uterine.

3. Ultrasound scan can be arranged to measure the thickened endometrium. In this procedure, a small device is placed in your vagina and sound waves are converted into images of the pelvic organs.

4. Hysteroscopy is done to allow doctors to look inside the womb using hysteroscopy. It is done to carefully pass through the vagina and cervix and into your uterus. Hysteroscopy has a video camera which can send pictures to computer.
