Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Current Concepts in Treatment

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), refers to inflammatory reaction of female pelvic cavity as well as peritoneum, uterus and its surrounding connective tissue. If acute pelvic inflammation is not treated timely and effectively, it will develope into chronic PID, and since the disease is stubborn, it brings certain difficulty in treatment.

Below are some direct factors which cause PID:

1. Neglect hygiene in private parts during menstrual period

Including: The use of contaminated sanitary napkins, do not change underwear for a long time, bathing or having sex during menstrual period. These could encourage pathogens'invasion during the menses.

2. Infection after delivery or abortion

Women after childbirth is very weak in physique, the cervix has not closed, plus there's a damage more or less to the uterine cavity. At this time the bacteria is more likely to invade the uterine cavity and cause infection. As for susceptibility to after-abortion infection, mostly because of vaginal bleeding for a long duration or residual tissue in uterine cavity, or surgery not performed under sterile conditions, and other factors.

3. Infection after intrauterine surgical procedure

When an intrauterine surgery is being performed, if the surgical disinfection is not effective or the preoperative diagnosis is wrong, the chance of postoperative infection will be increased. Some patients do not pay attention to personal hygiene after surgery, or do not follow the doctor's advice, it will also cause pelvic inflammatory disease.

4. The inflammation in the surrounding tissues spreads directly

Peritonitis and appendicitis are more common, because peritoneum and appendix are more close to female reproductive organs, thus the inflammation can directly spread and cause pelvic inflammation.

So what are the current treatment measures available for PID?

1. Drug therapy or pharmacotherapy

Most patients are initially treated with antibiotics, especially a combination of broad-spectrum antibiotics and anaerobes. But as the development of antibiotic resistance progresses, they could not get particular improvement even with adequate duration of treatment. That's why an increasing number of Gynecologists advocate natural therapy or herbal treatment, for less side effects, less harm to female liver and kidney, and ultimate cure. One of the recommendation is TCM formula Fuyan Pill.

Fuyan Pill is a pure botanical herbal formula, the ingredients of which are derived from nature and can be taken for a long time without side effects. It contains herbs for pelvic blood circulation promotion and blood stasis removal, heat clearing and detoxicating, and patients will get a fundamental cure with enhanced immune system and restored reproductive system.

2. Surgical treatment

If pelvic inflammatory disease get complicated by ovarian cyst, hydrosalpinx or other conditions, surgical treatment must be performed. In addition, recurrent infection are also more suited for surgery. However, due to the operation of the instrument, there may be excision and pain after it, and patients need to be nursed in the hospital or at home for a while, which increases the psychological burden and mental stress of the patients.

3. Psychological therapy

Many patients with pelvic inflammatory disease have psychological problems, generally manifested as worries, irritability, etc., so appropriate psychological treatment is needed to enhance the confidence of patients during the treatment.

Under normal circumstances, the female reproductive system poses a certain defense against bacteria from invading the body, therefore, it is very important to improve the body's resistance by reasonable diet, moderate exercise, adequate rest and appropriate nutritional supplements.
